Rizzi Meets Van Gogh

Inspired by art teacher Cassie Stephens, Pulaski County’s own Laura Aylor adopted a lesson Stephens posted called “Rizzi Meets Van Gogh Cities.” Many people are familiar with the work of the famous 19th century painter Vincent van Gogh whose colorful works used bright colors and brushstrokes that evoked emotion. You may have even noticed his influence in another Youth Art Month collection, “Snowy Night.” James Rizzi was an American pop artist the last century who also used bright colors but to a much different effect. One of his most famous installations is not just a painting, it’s an entire collection of multi-story buildings! Located in Braunschweig, Germany, the “Happy Rizzi House” was the inspiration for these colorful cityscapes. Above the buildings you’ll note the curving atmospheric shapes often attributed to Van Gogh.

If you’re interested, you can review Cassie Stephens lesson along with a video she created for her own students on her blog. Or you can just enjoy the outcome from these talented local student artists.

These colorful cityscapes can be found displayed in the window of the Wedding Center & ELF’s Alterations. The street number is 72, so be sure to write 72 on your game card in the block labeled RIZZI.
