Advanced Registration Required

Artist and popular teacher Mary Ruff returns for this six-week class from 10:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. on Saturdays from June 8 to July 13, 2024. Students who have participated in her Beginning Drawing class are well suited for this one.

Topics in the drawing curriculum will include:

  • Composition Definitions

  • The 7 Elements of Design

  • General Rules of Composition

  • The Principles of Design

  • Atmospheric Perspective

  • Creating Depth in Your Drawings

  • Background Considerations

  • How to Create a Still Life

The first 30-60 minutes of each class will focus on teaching a facet of composition, followed by a class exercise to reinforce the material covered. The remainder of the class will allow the students to work on their current fine-art drawings and will include a critique of their work.

This class is for adults 18 years and over who have some art experience and who want to enhance their drawing skills. Responsible, highly motivated teens may be allowed with advance permission from FACNRV and the instructor. There is a minimum of 6 students required for the class.

Materials:

  • Paper. Mary recommends paper that is 80 lb. or higher in weight either 14” x 17” or 18” x 24”. Two good brands to look for are Strathmore or Canson. Be sure to purchase a drawing pad and not a sketch pad, as the drawing pad is of better quality.

  • Pencils. The minimum necessary to start are: 2H, HB, and 2B, but you may consider a full range of pencils 9H – 9B. There are many good brands, including: Derwent, Tombow, Eberhard Faber, Staedtler, Kimberly, Prismacolor Turquoise, Koh-I-Noor, Sanford, and General.

  • Erasers. Please bring two: a gray, kneaded eraser and a white eraser.

  • Pencil Sharpener. Handheld or battery powered are fine. There are sharpeners at the Center that you are welcome to use.

  • Ruler.

You can protect your fine-art drawings with the following:

  • A drawing board.

  • Artist’s tape.

  • Tracing paper, cardboard, and clips.

Cancellation/Refund: The Fine Arts Center for the New River Valley will conduct classes for which an adequate number of students are registered. Class status is determined one week before the first date of the class, unless otherwise noted. Acceptance of payment does not guarantee that a class will run. Student Withdrawals: Students withdrawing from a class before the cancellation period has ended, (one week prior to the start of class unless otherwise noted) can receive a full refund or may transfer their payments to another class of their choice. Students who withdraw after the cancellation period has closed or after class has started will not receive a refund.
