Joanie Whitlock Sutphin

As a watercolor artist I convey the beauty of botanicals and landscapes through the highly pigmented fluid medium in my paintings. Within the busy world of a mother of three, my art is both a sanctuary and a departure—a way to step away from the rhythm of a busy household and into a world of natural light and creative focus.

Working from a repurposed flour cabinet that once belonged to my great-aunt, I bridge the domestic and the artistic. I utilize a range of techniques at my own pace, including wet-on-wet, dry brushing, texture and many others to capture the delicate flowers or the wonder of a landscape. Ultimately, my work is an invitation to the viewer to pause, breathe, and find their own escape within the painting.
